Something for the Weekend

You know it’s a Friday when I’m rolling around town with a plastic bag full of loose eggs stashed inside my purse (among other things).

Photobucket
At the same time, it’s not every Friday that your next door neighbor hands you a box of Paris-procured macarons on the way to the office….

Down at the university, it kinda looks like just another weekday. Nothing special about this Friday.

Even these guys are so commonplace that they are starting to look a bit like bored students. That is until students start throwing rocks at them.

Grocery shopping, accepting surprise gifts and quotidienne student demonstrations notwithstanding, today really is a special Friday in Senegal. Why is this?

Well, at long last, it’s….

Except the music here is much, much better.

You may be suffering from a touch of election fatigue, but at last it’s time to dust off your t-shirts. The good people of Senegal are finally going to pick their next leader on Sunday.
(Jërëjëf by the way to @basileniane and @tetreaultaj for scoring me one of these great shirts. I look forward to participating in this weekend’s reporting in the Twittersphere.)

To the rest of the world who is not keyed into Senegal, I will provide you with a basic recap of where we left off after round one (and you have my understanding if you’ve been distracted by the events taking place just to the east of here).

We’ve got two candidates left standing, and in ice hockey parlance- it’s now sudden death overtime. The Cup is in the house, so to speak…

In this corner we have our bold incumbent: the man with big ideas…

And in the other corner, we have the challenger: a former Wade protégé and candidate with the most effective campaign poster that I have ever witnessed anywhere. Macky has used this interim period to meet and gain the approval of all 12 challengers who did not make it this run-off.

What am I doing for the election? Well, as you all well know by now, I sure as heck can’t vote. But I can bake. And I do know how to observe a thing or two. So I’ll be heading out this weekend with banana oat muffins and observer credentials in hand. I’m really looking forward to it.

You can feel the sense of ownership around here- I don’t think that’s just me being an optimistic outsider. This may not be my home, ma patrie, but I definitely feel invested in what’s going on at the moment.

Bon weekend!
