New Year’s Antics

Happy New Year!

New Year Run

Sunrise run on New Year’s Day with my brother-in-law. I can’t think of a better way to start 2011 than by doing ten good miles in Boston.
Last year brought a lot of challenges and “opportunities for growth”, but I am totally happy that it is finally January first. I may not have experienced first night festivities in Dakar, but I am completely happy with this fact. It probably goes without saying that it was a big boost to my morale that I got to spend New Year’s eve in a city I love (I was in bed for the countdown) with the people I love.
Anyways, I’m heading back to Dakar tomorrow. Here’s a few photos of my last gasp in Boston:
Chappy 009
Before I left Cape Cod we made a stop at Chappy. It was a nice day and worthy of a cartwheel or two.

A salute before we make our way to the Bourne Bridge…

Right before we headed off-Cape we shot the inaugural cannon blast from the fantastic new lighthouse.

I spent the last few days of my trip back home in Masshole Central: Boston. If I don’t retire to Dublin in 2020, I will be in Boston for sure. There are just too many good things going on here- and much more than the hockey:

Mmmmm… noodles at Wagamama. I haven’t been to this place since I was a college student.

Our New Year’s meal: chocolate fettuccine with Gorgonzola and pecans…this was followed by a few rounds of Dance Central:

Don’t worry, each of us got our shot at dancing like an idiot on New Year’s Eve. Hey, at least we didn’t spend New Years reading mystery novels like our friend Mike Lee…

New Year’s Day was mostly consumed by hockey.  Again, I can’t think of a better way to spend 1/1/2011:
Due to weather, the Winter Classic was pushed back to an 8pm start. What better way to anticipate opening festivities than to drink excellent wine and watch all of the previous Winter Classics? (Yes, I know that I am not your typical hockey spectator….)

Before the Winter Classic started, I ran out to catch up with my good pal and fellow marathoner Joan. She is headed to the Patriots game tomorrow, and it was great to hang out with a familiar face before tomorrow’s exodus:

On Newbury Street in Boston, a dark shot of the two of us.

So this may not be an exciting entry, but this year’s Winter Classic is not yet over.  The Bruins also just blew a lead to send the team into overtime in Buffalo. I don’t hold out great hope for the Bruins, but I am secretly hoping for a Caps victory in Pittsburgh after watching 24/7 on HBO.

I’m ready to head back to Dakar. My trip back home has yielded more than I ever could have have hoped, and the sooner I get going with returning, the sooner I can get on with other cool stuff.
